When Frederick Law Olmsted designed the Approach Road, he wanted to heighten the anticipation of the visitors by having them wind slowly through a meandering maze of mysterious and beautiful greenery. He wanted to create the sensation of passing through the remote depths of a natural forest, culminating with the abrupt ending of the trail and the first dramatic and picturesque view of the House. In doing this, Olmsted used hundreds of species of plant life to line the long road, strategically blocking the view of the House until the very end. He also used this diverse plant life to create the many miles of walking trails. Just as much care and attention was given to the elements outside of the House as there was inside. The Country Manor Collection, made of antiqued solid cast brass throughout, captures this pristine and natural splendor.
