Energy Star: Qualified Lighting

ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs, fixtures, and ceiling fans meet strict energy efficiency criteria without sacrificing performance. They are a stylish addition to match the décor of your home or office—while saving energy, money, and the environment.

Choosing ENERGY STAR qualified lighting helps save both energy and money on utility bills. On average, ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures use 75 percent less energy than traditional models. And, replacing a traditional bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL can save about $30 or more in energy costs over its lifetime.* To save even more, replace your most frequently used fixtures and bulbs with models that have earned the government’s ENERGY STAR.

*Based on a 24W CFL with a life of 6,000 hours and a 75W incandescent bulb with a life of 1,000 hours at $0.1079 per kWh.

Lighting Fixtures Overview

Light fixtures that have earned the ENERGY STAR combine quality and attractive design with the highest levels of energy efficiency available today.

  • Use 1/4 the energy of traditional lighting.
  • Save money on energy bills and bulb replacements, with bulbs that must last at least 10,000 hours (about seven years of regular use).
  • Distribute light more efficiently and evenly than standard fixtures.
  • Come in hundreds of decorative styles including portable fixtures - such as table, desk and floor lamps - and hard-wired options such as front porch, dining room, kitchen ceiling and under-cabinet, hallway ceiling and wall, bathroom vanity fixtures, and more.

Lighting Fixtures Key Criteria Overview

  • The Bulb: A GU24-base which is very common bulb-ballast combination. This will ensure that your ballast can always be replaced in future years. (Linear lamps also have similar requirements)
  • Color Rendition must be at least 80: Incandescent light bulbs have a CRI of 100, it has only been within the last couple of years that CFLs have reached a higher CRI measurement. In the past they were more in the 50-60s.
  • Electronic Ballast: Your ballast will not hum and the bulb will light up without flickering.
  • Energy Efficiency: All ES lighting fixtures need to be energy efficient when measured against traditional fixtures.

Ceiling Fans with Light Overview

DID YOU KNOW?
ENERGY STAR qualified ceiling fans with lights are 50% more efficient than conventional fan/light units, saving you more than $170 in energy costs over the fan's lifetime AND ENERGY STAR qualified ceiling fans with lights are 51% more efficient than non-qualified models.

While ENERGY STAR qualified ceiling fans use improved motors and blade designs, you can dramatically increase your savings with ENERGY STAR qualified lighting.
