Design Aesthetics: Aesthetic Response vs. Function

In the design arena, aesthetics and functionality are crucial but both can be uniquely different. Function is the purpose for which a design is developed. Aesthetic Response is a human reaction to the artistic qualities of a sensory experience. (Interior Design,.3rd Ed). Both aspects create challenges for all designers in all industries. For example, lighting fixtures that are designed, manufactured and sold must undergo a design process. Each aspect of function and aesthetics are considered because they are a crucial part during the design process. A lighting fixture at times might not be able to serve both purposes. For instance a fluorescent light fixture that is readily used in the commercial arena like warehouses and offices serve their purposes, but one might not place this fixture in their homes. Then there are lighting fixtures like pendants that are extremely versatile for both home and commercial use. With that in mind choosing lighting fixtures for your indoor and outdoor spaces will help set the tone and create a lighting experience for your home.
