Lighting Guide: Purchasing & Installing Outdoor Lighting Fixtures
Outdoors: Purchasing & Installing
Look for lighting fixtures that are made of durable die cast and aluminum tubing, brass, and copper fixtures. They tend to stand up to the elements. Try not to get carried away with illuminating every part of your exterior.
Start with areas of importance. Areas like your patio and walkways are a good start for your lighting scheme. Try using accent lighting fixtures like path and spread, post or deck lights. Placing outdoor chandeliers will add elegance to any outside patio. Keep in mind that low voltage lighting systems might be available in kits, which can be easy to install.
An important reminder before installation is to make sure there is an exterior grounded outlet. If you don’t have one of these available, please consult with an electrician to have one installed. It’s a good idea to have your local electrician install an outlet with a GFCI (Grounded Fault Circuit Interrupter). Upon purchasing a kit make sure your fixture choice is what you want. It should also contain a transformer and cable ready for easy installation. If purchasing a kit doesn't’t suit you, another option is to purchase each item separately.
