Lighting Guide: Ceiling Fans for the Summer & Winter

1STOP Lighting Guide

Ceiling Fans: What direction should my fan spin for summer or winter?

It is a good idea for your ceiling fan to rotate counter-clockwise during the summer to help generate a cool downward breeze. During the winter, blades should rotate clockwise to help cycle the warm air that rises. Running your ceiling fan during both seasons will help you save money on your heating and cooling bills so don’t be afraid to use them.

In 2005 the United States Congress created the Energy Policy Act., a set of laws specifically relating to energy efficiency in ceiling fans and ceiling fan light kits. Beginning January 1, 2007 all fans manufactured must be reversible and have separate controls for fan speeds and lighting. In addition, all ceiling fans with integrated light kits and sold-separate light kits have energy saving light and light socket requirements. Check when your fan was manufactured and verify if your purchase has a rotation feature that will compliment your needs during the Summer and Winter seasons.
