Have you been shopping for pendant lights to go over your kitchen island, but aren’t sure how many to order, what size to get, or how you should ultimately hang them to make them look amazing over your kitchen island?
You aren’t alone! There are loads of people who have been asking us the same questions.
By the end of this guide for how to choose kitchen island pendant lighting, you will feel confident buying the exact number and size pendant lights you’ll need to go over your kitchen island. Plus, you’ll know exactly how to guide your installer (whether it’s you, your hubby or your electrician) when it comes time to hang them.
The general rule of thumb for figuring out the best width for your kitchen island pendant lighting is to start by measuring the width of your kitchen island. Then, subtract 12-inches from the width measurement. This will help ensure that you have a clearance of at least 6-inches around both sides of the pendant lighting.
Your math will look like this:
36-inch-wide island – 12 inches = your pendant lights should be no more than 24 inches wide
24-inch-wide island – 12 inches = your pendant lights should be no more than 12 inches wide

Keep in mind that this is simply a guideline and you may want to take other things into consideration when determining the right size pendant light for your kitchen island. If your kitchen is huge and your ceilings are tall, you’ll want to look at larger scale pendant lights, whereas if your kitchen is on the smaller side or your ceilings are low, then you’ll want to veer towards a smaller scale pendant light.
So, if your island is 4 feet wide, then you don’t want to go with a 12-inch diameter pendant light. Instead, you would want to look at lights that are at least 24 inches in diameter and maybe even up to 36 inches in diameter.
★PRO TIP: Sketch out the dimensions of the kitchen island pendant lighting you want to buy on some brown paper, or a roll of leftover gift wrap, and then cut out the shapes (that are now to scale). Place the shapes on top of your island in the same places where you might want to hang them, so you can get a feel for scale before you purchase the pendant lights.

When you’re getting ready to purchase kitchen island pendant lighting, it’s important to think about the type of function and ambiance you want your lights to provide in your kitchen.
Is this going to be a workspace, where you need the illumination to point down, so that you have a brighter workspace? In this situation, you’ll want to make sure that the style of pendant light shade you choose is cupping towards the countertop and that the lights themselves point down.
Or, is this going to be a gathering place, where you want the illumination to be softer and therefore point up? In this case, you might want to go for any style with a candle style light that points up or consider a shade that cups towards the ceiling.

To perfectly space your kitchen island pendant lighting, you’ll want to measure the length of your kitchen island, then subtract 12- inches from both ends. This will provide enough clearance that people won’t bonk their heads on the lights when they walk around the island.
Now, take the remaining space (once the 12-inches have been taken away from each end) and find the center mark. The rule of thumb for spacing in between pendant lights is that you want them to be at least the same width apart as they are in diameter. So, if your pendant lights are 24-inches in diameter, then you’ll want to space them 24-inches apart. Take the center mark, and space each light 1 foot away from the center to ensure that your lights are evenly spaced across the kitchen island.
★PRO TIP: Sketch out the scale of your kitchen island on a piece of graph paper. Then, draw out the scale of the kitchen island pendant light ideas you’re thinking of to make sure you like the overall scale prior to adding any pendant lights to your cart. You can use this method to play with spanning your kitchen island with fewer pendants at a larger scale or more pendants at a smaller scale.
Typically, you want to make sure that the bottom of your kitchen island pendant lighting hangs 30 to 36-inches from your countertop. With that said, you don’t want your family or friends staring directly into a light when they are standing around the island. So, take the height of the people in your home into consideration when hanging your pendant lights.
