More and more people are selecting pendants for their dining room lighting. Some people select a single, oversized pendant to make a bold statement and foster a more modern look., while others will select 2 or 3 pendants for a more traditional look.
What size, and how many pendants do you need? Let’s start with figuring out the size pendant that is right for your space:
- Take your table width (in feet) and subtract one foot. Take your table length and subtract one foot. Add these two figures together. For example, a 4-foot-wide table that is 10-feet long would be (4-1) + (10-1) or 12… meaning our pendant should be a maximum of approximately 12” wide.
- Identify how many pendants you’d like… if possible, stay with odd numbers.
- To identify the proper spacing between pendants, use this formula:
- Length of table in feet ÷ (# of pendants +1) = Minimum distance between pendants
- In our example, our 10-foot-long table with three pendants over it would be 10 ÷ (3+1) = 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5 feet between pendants
When hanging your pendants, they should be 30”-36” above the table height. As a little hack for playing around with this, hang a balloon from some string and play with the height until you get it to your liking.
