Tips for Outdoor Fall Lighting

Autumn is just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean your porch-sitting days are over. Take advantage of the comfortable temperatures and shorter days by changing your décor and adding the perfect fall lighting for early evening relaxation time.

Front Door Focal Point

"Sometimes simplicity is key," says Piper Stromatt, partner at Curate Custom Homes. "Make sure you have enough seasonal coverage, space for accommodating furniture, good lighting, and a focal point such as an outdoor fireplace or another decor element."

Choose fall lighting that adds to the beauty and functionality of an outside porch by hanging a pendant like the Haddon lantern to illuminate with nostalgic charm. “This pendant did just that for this space,” said Piper. “Just imagine nestling up with a cup of coffee to take in the views in the crisp morning hours.” Hanging lights (such as pendants and lanterns) should be sized at 1/5 the door’s height and centered six inches above the door for maximum impact and illumination.

Sizing and Safety Tips for Outdoor Lighting

Size really does matter! Fall lighting fixtures used to illuminate the front door, need to be sized in proportion to the door. Wall lanterns by the door should measure anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 the size of your front door. In general, outdoor sconces and lanterns should be mounted at eye level (with the center of the light mounted at approximately 66 inches), six to twelve inches from the door casing, and 8 to 10 feet apart. Fixtures placed over the doorway should be sized at 1/4 or 1/3 the door frame’s width and centered six inches above the door.
